Richard More (strathearn) > DCP1964/66-4581JA Crown Sulfide....Strathearn Jack Allen Crown Sulfide over a ground of Monart and early Ysart complex canes & a clear base 3.1" x 2.15" & 19 ozs. Flat polished base with a concave pontil mark area. Black Strathearn label. Signed with an orange "JA" cane. Dave Moir told me that he and Jack made this and a few more "JA" signature canes around the 1963 to 1964 period at the old Perth Vasart glassworks when Vincent was out sick one day. Also this "JA" cane is made of Vitrolite tile glass. According to Dave after Salvador died things got tough at Vasart and Augustine had a fishing friend who was the local Glazier and he'd give Vasart the cut offs from his bathroom and kitchen Vitrolite tiles. These Vitrolite tile pieces were melted and used for making canes for paperweights and also used in mixtures for making the colored glass for the bands for putting whorls in the colored glass for vases. Dave also said that the canes in this weight are of the Monart and early Ysart Glass period canes. All of these canes can be found in older Salvador and Paul Ysart Pwts. Dave doesn't know for sure where Jack got the Crown Sulfide but he thinks it may have been from Frank Eisner an old "Chec" glassmaker who worked for the John Moncrieff Glassworks of Perth and who they used to go for beer with on Saturdays for lunch after work. A rare and stunning piece by Jack Allen during his later Strathearn period. circa 1964 to 1966. acquired 06-25-04.
