There are no photos in this first album only text describing the following albums.
Strathearn during its life of January 1965 until May of 1980 made thousands of individual canes from simple ones to very complex ones. Their use of designs, colors and canes within canes is quite astonishing. The galleries will be set up by year from 1965 to 1980 and for now the canes shown will ONLY be those from dated Strathearn paperweights.
While these albums will be interesting to view it is IMPORTANT to understand the following points: 1.) Strathearn was formed in 1964 when Teachers Whiskey bought out Vasart, built a new factory and renamed the company and as such the same people working at Vasart, a lot of the same equipment and all of the on hand supplies and canes moved to Strathearn. 2.) Strathearn's workers continued to use all of the existing stock from the Ysart/Vasart period of 1946 to 1964 along with newly formed Strathearn stock of canes so it is not unusual to find known Ysart/Vasart canes in dated and undated weights up to and including 1980. 3.) Just because a weight is dated say 1970 does not mean that those particular canes were made in 1970. They could have been made in any prior year and these albums will only reflect a particular cane for that year until such time as an earlier example can be found in an earlier dated weight or as with the Ysart/vasart canes attributed to an earlier period. Although unlikely it is also possible that a particular cane may have been made in a later year but placed in a weight with an earlier date cane rather than the date cane for that particular year. 4.) I would not advise or recommend the use of these albums to try and date any undated pwt someone might have nor would I be comfortable with a statement of such unless at least a 90% PLUS match of all canes were achievable.
You will notice in some yearly albums that a particular cane may well have shown up in a prior or later years album and this will be noted where I find them and this merely shows that a particular cane may have made its appearance for the first time in that earlier year but remember that this is always open to updates and corrections as earlier examples are found. For example, all of the canes shown in the 1970 album does not mean that they were first made or used in that year. For these reasons trying to date an undated Strathearn pwt using these albums will be very, very difficult at best and quite possibly impossible. These canes shown are only a very tiny, a very small segment of the vast number of canes that Strathearn made and used over the years. In my research I have identified well over one thousand different canes and feel that I haven't even made a dent in the probable Strathearn canes used. Some years will be absent for the time being as I don't have any millefiori canes examples for those years yet.
As with all of my albums posted here on my Smugmug site the numbering system remains the same throughout the albums. For example in the first Ysart/Vasart Pirelli cane album you'll see an identification number like DCP1956-4112-1-Vpirelli pindish...the 1956 represents the probable date of the cane, the 4112 represents the pwt number in my albums and you can see this particular pwt by going to the album indicated...this being under the Vasart Pirelli album (which is not currently listed)...the #1 merely represents a cane in that particular pwt and in all my cane albums the #1 cane is the first cane in the center of the weight, #2 would be for the canes in the next ring or rings around the center cane and so on. The #6 will not show up for any spoke type pwts as this # is reserved for the filigree or latticino strands dividing the particular pwt spokes and that is for another album at a later date but the #6 will show for all non-spoke weights. The V or VP merely represents that this is a Vasart Pwt and finally the name Pirelli Pindish or Spoke or whatever.
Also, since all of these pwts are dated you can also find the corresponding pwt to view in full by refering to the Signed and dated Strathearns by Year album or in the regular albums under its respective "P" number.
I am starting to add some Ysart/Vasart cane albums to cover canes from the 1946 to 1955 Ysart Bros Glass period and the 1956 to 1964 Vasart period. The first album is for 1956 Pirelli labeled paperweights as this was from what I understand the only year in which this label was used and as such may be somewhat usable for a possible time period dating of these canes. The second album is for those Vasarts that I have that actually have the Black and Silver label on them as this label was not used until 1956 and up to 1964. Other albums will be added as I get to them.
These albums are from my own collection of dated Strathearn pwts and the kind addition of a few weights from Private Collectors and I would be pleased to add other canes from other collectors of dated Strathearn pwts and if anyone is interested please contact me at srmoresr1@yahoo.com for the details that I would need to add other cane examples.
Please note and understand that this is completely a "work in progress" and will be constantly updated as and when necessary or as new information comes to light.
This is a brand new gallery with no photos.
