Strathearn P1 Ice Pool paperweight, a piece of Scottish quartz floating in clear glass and according to the Strathearn brochure a number of Strathearn's paperweights took their inspiration from Nature and incorporated these natural materials into their weights. The P2 Stoer weight using Scottish sand and granite is another of these nature related weights. This P1 Ice Pool weight was also extended to include the PSF12 a 5/1 faceted weight and also to a PSMF123 third series that was multi-faceted on all sides. Only two paperweights were extended to three in the series like this, the other being the P6 upright flower weight. I still don't know how Strathearn derived their "P" numbering system or whether or not the P1 designates the first paperweight series that Strathearn made or perhaps just a number picked out of a "bank" of numbers. Since Strathearn was just a continuation of Vasart I'm inclined to believe that Vasart had a numbering system of some sort which Strathearn just continued to use and over time filled in the available empty "P" numbers as they developed new paperweight styles or designs. The P1 was an "open edition" weight meaning that they made as many of these each year as they wanted or felt they could sell whereas the PSF12 and the PSMF123 were limited to only 100 per year each.
DCP04394P1-Ice Pool...Strathearn P1 Ice Pool, a piece of Scottish Quartz embedded in a clear glass paperweight, 3.05" x 2.5" and 21 ozs. Smooth fire-polished base with an impressed "leaping salmon" logo. No label. Strathearn weights with the impressed "leaping salmon" logo are quite rare and I've not seen any that I could attribute to an earlier date so far the time being I am placing these impressed "leaping salmon" logo pwts into the 1978 to 1980 time period. Acquired 10-03-02.
