Ysart & Vasart Paperweights 1946 to 1964 Galleries

Ysart & Vasart Bartools 1946 to 1964 : These are some of the Barware items that were made from 1946 to 1964 by Salvador Ysart and sons Augustine and Vincent under the company name Ysart Bros Glass (Vasart) from 1946 to 1956 and then formally as Vasart from 1956 to 1964. As far as I am aware there is no written descriptions of the various Ysart/Vasart paperweights or paperweight related items. Suffice to say that under the Strathearn name the same lines of paperweights made during these Ysart/Vasart years continued with only a few exceptions. It is also apparent that a lot less variety of paperweights and paperweight related items were made during the Ysart/Vasart years than during the Strathearn years. I have set up this Barware album (and subsequent Ysart/Vasart albums) showing what I feel are the earlier Ysart Bros Glass items first then blending into the Vasart items. The position of some of these items shown may change in the future as my research on cane identification makes progress. If anyone viewing these albums has any older Ysart/Vasart pwts especially those with the name Vasart or Made In Scotland acid etched on the base (which would be from the 1946 to 1955 period) and/or Pirelli black and silver paper labels (which generally specify the years 1956 to 1959) and would like to have your weight posted here please do contact me at srmoresr1@yahoo.com for details of what I'd like to work with. Please note that I am using the designation YVP (Ysart/Vasart Paperweight for those items I feel are circa 1946 to 1959) and VP (Vasart Paperweight for those items I feel are circa 1956 to 1964) and I am also using the same number designation that Strathearn used...for example a Strathearn large spoke or cartwheel weight was designated as P7 so a large Ysart/Vasart spoke weight would be a YVP7 and a large Vasart spoke weight would be a VP7. Note: I would draw your attention to my Bottle Opener #4863 in this gallery which actually has the date 1959 stamped into the shank metal.

Ysart & Vasart Budvase & Budvase bottoms 1946 to 1964 : Vasart as well as Strathearn made these budvases over the years. I have never seen any that I would classify as of the Ysart/Vasart period of 1946 to 1955 so these are all Vasart examples from the 1956 to 1964 period. As with the Strathearn Budvases which used the P9 minature concentric style weight for its base it is apparent that Vasart also used their VP9 minature concentric style weight for their bases. Height range is from about 5.5" to just over 7.0".

Ysart/Vasart Saucer CandleHolder : Here we have a rather unusual Ysart/Vasart period paperweight item. It is most likely designed to be a candle holder. In an article by Bob Hall in the August 2004 Paperweight Collectors Circle Newsletter no.85 Bob shows a photo of another of these items and has a brief discussion with Kevin Holt regarding the one shown in the article photo and one other that Kevin said he had seen. Is this the third one and could more exist?... only time will tell.

Ysart & Vasart Closepacks & Patterns : Ysart/Vasart and Vasart both made carpet ground or closepack weights in various sizes and designs over the years. Not enough of these have shown up to say for sure that they were a somewhat regular production item. I have seen one that was of the medium to small size at around 2.5" and about a dozen larger ones at 2.7" or larger. Also, a few have shown up like the one shown below which is more of a patterned closepack. Since there is no known numbering or official designation sytem for these weights or other Ysart/Vasart or Vasart weights I have used the Strathearn system for classifying them such that if I think a weight was made in the early Ysart/Vasart period of 1946 to 1955/59 then I use a YVP (Ysart/Vasart paperweight) designation, if the Vasart period of 1956 to 1964 than I use a VP (Vasart paperweight) designation. Since I've placed a pattern designation to the closepack shown I am also adding patterned millefiori weights such as the one shown to this gallery until and if I get enough of either to have separate galleries.

Ysart & Vasart Concentrics : Here we have some examples of the Ysart/Vasart period of 1946 to 1955 concentric weights. A fair number of these concentric type weights were made during this Ysart/Vasart period but for whatever reason Vasart (period 1956 to 1964) did not make very many (if any) of these concentric type weights and Strathearn did not make any concentrics until they came out with their special SP100 series in 1979 and 1980. I've noticed that almost all of these concentrics are usually attributed to Salvador but I don't think that is quite possible. Dave Moir arrived at Vasart in 1953 and Salvador was in ill health and not making any paperweights and possibly had not for a couple of years prior to that time. Considering that Ysart/Vasart did not begin operations until 1946 and Salvador most likely not making any pwts from about 1950 on then someone else had to have made some of these weights. According to Dave both Vincent and Augustine were quite talented and capable of making quality weights and while we may never know for sure just who made some of these weights I feel it is quite reasonable to consider that some of these lovely concentric weights were made by Augustine and Vincent.

Ysart/Vasart Flower : Here is an example of a Ysart/Vasart period flower weight. I don't have any information on flower weights of this period but I seem to remember seeing another one similiar to this one and if I can find the information I will post it here. It is possible that this flower weight was made during the Ysart Brothers Glass period of 1946 to 1955 but also likely later in the Vasart period of 1956 to 1964 leading up to the Strathearn period when the Strathearn D4 flower weights first made their appearance in or around 1966 to 1967. For the time being I am placing this weight as circa 1946 to 1956/59 since it has Ysart/Vasart canes in it.

Ysart & Vasart Hardware 1946 to 1964 : These are paperweight hardware items made by the Ysart/Vasart Bros and Vasart glassworks from around 1946 to 1956/59 for Ysart/Vasart (YVP) and 1956 to 1964 for Vasart (VP). I have these shown in what I believe is the YVP items first and then the later VP items. Some of these hardware items are gear shift knobs, drawer pulls and letter openers. Barware is listed under its own separate catagory.

Ysart & Vasart Inkwells : These are examples of inkwells made during the Ysart/Vasart period of 1946 to 1956/59 and the Vasart period of 1956/59 to 1964. A fair number of these were made in both periods but for whatever reason Strathearn didn't make any until the 1979 to 1980 period. The earlier Ysart/Vasart period red one has the wrong stopper. Perhaps someone has the base and is looking for their stopper and should anyone ever see the actual stopper to my inkwell I would appreciate being contacted.

Ysart & Vasart Pindishes : These are pindishes made by Ysart/Vasart and Vasart glassworks from 1946 to 1956/59 (YVP) and 1956/59 to 1964 (VP) in a spoke or cartwheel design. To date I have not seen any of these pindishes made in any other design. As with all of my other Ysart/Vasart and Vasart paperweights and paperweight related items I have the album set up showing what I believe are the earlier YVP items and then the later VP items.

Ysart & Vasart Star Spoke Large VP11 : These are examples of molded star weights by Vasart circa 1956/59 to 1964 and these were most likely the forerunner design to the Strathearn star weights. Since it is quite likely that Strathearn modeled their star weights after the Vasart versions I have used the Strathearn designations of P11 large, P12 medium/small and P13 minature for their star weights to relate back to the Vasart star weights as VP11, VP12 and VP13. To date I have not seen any star shaped weights made in the Ysart/Vasart period of 1946 to 1956/59 and it is possible that Ysart/Vasart never made any.

Ysart & Vasart Spoke Large YVP7 & VP7 : These are Ysart/Vasart and Vasart large paperweights from the 1946 to 1964 period. I have designated the weights from the earlier Ysart Bros Glass (Vasart) as YVP7 weights (similiar to Strathearn P7 large weights) circa 1946 to 1956/59 and for the later Vasarts as VP7 weights circa 1956/59 to 1964. As with the Strathearn P7 weights these YVP7 and VP7 weights range in size from 2.70" to over 3.0". I don't have much information on these paperweights and there is not a lot of information anywhere on these period weights but as with all of the paperweights made from 1946 to 1964 they were not a primary production item. At this time I do not have any idea of how many were made yearly or in total but if and when I ever find any information it will be posted here.

Ysart & Vasart Spoke Medium to Small YVP8 & VP8 : These are Ysart/Vasart and Vasart small to medium paperweights from the 1946 to 1964 period. I have designated the weights from the earlier Ysart Bros Glass (Vasart) as YVP8 weights (similiar to Strathearn P8 small to medium weights) circa 1946 to 1956/59 and for the later Vasarts as VP8 weights circa 1956/59 to 1964. I have them listed in the photos below showing what I believe are the weights from the YVP period first and then blending into the VP period weights. As with Strathearn P8 small to medium weights which I have found in sizes ranging from around 2.25" to just under 2.70" and which I broke into small and medium weight catagories so too have I broken these YVP8 and VP8 weights into small ones at around 2.25" to 2.49" and into medium ones at 2.50" to just under 2.70". I don't have a lot of information on these weights from these two periods but suffice to say they were not main stay production items during this time so I have no idea how many were made per year or in total and most likely no one else does either but if and when I do find out any new information it will be included here.

Ysart & Vasart Minature Concentric YVP9 & VP9 : These are examples of Ysart/Vasart and Vasart minature concentric, patterned and spoke paperweights that were the predecessors to the Strathearn P9 minature weights. Since there is no known listing or official designation to the Ysart/Vasart and Vasart weights I have kept the same designations as used for Strathearn weights so a Ysart/Vasart minature weight is designated as a YVP9 and a Vasart minature as a VP9. I am also showing these in the order I feel is the YVP9 weights first and then the VP9 weights. These were made circa 1946 to 1956/59 for the YVP9 minatures and circa 1956 to 1964 for the VP9 minatures. These same weights, as with the Strathearn P9 weights, were also used for barware and hardware items. They range in size from about 1.3" to just under 2.0" in diameter.

Ysart & Vasart Torsade Concentrics : These are examples of Ysart/Vasart and Vasart Torsade Concentric weights with an outer row of latticino or ribbon twists with or without interspaced canes and solid cane torsade designs. Weights of this design were made throughout the period of 1946 to 1956 (Ysart/Vasart) and 1956/59 (the Pirelli period) and to 1964 the end of the Vasart period.
