Ysart & Vasart Paperweights 1946 to 1964 Galleries

Ysart & Vasart Bartools 1946 to 1964 : These are some of the Barware items that were made from 1946 to 1964 by Salvador Ysart and sons Augustine and Vincent under the company name Ysart Bros Glass (Vasart) from 1946 to 1956 and then formally as Vasart from 1956 to 1964. As far as I am aware there is no written descriptions of the various Ysart/Vasart paperweights or paperweight related items. Suffice to say that under the Strathearn name the same lines of paperweights made during these Ysart/Vasart years continued with only a few exceptions. It is also apparent that a lot less variety of paperweights and paperweight related items were made during the Ysart/Vasart years than during the Strathearn years. I have set up this Barware album (and subsequent Ysart/Vasart albums) showing what I feel are the earlier Ysart Bros Glass items first then blending into the Vasart items. The position of some of these items shown may change in the future as my research on cane identification makes progress. If anyone viewing these albums has any older Ysart/Vasart pwts especially those with the name Vasart or Made In Scotland acid etched on the base (which would be from the 1946 to 1955 period) and/or Pirelli black and silver paper labels (which generally specify the years 1956 to 1959) and would like to have your weight posted here please do contact me at srmoresr1@yahoo.com for details of what I'd like to work with. Please note that I am using the designation YVP (Ysart/Vasart Paperweight for those items I feel are circa 1946 to 1959) and VP (Vasart Paperweight for those items I feel are circa 1956 to 1964) and I am also using the same number designation that Strathearn used...for example a Strathearn large spoke or cartwheel weight was designated as P7 so a large Ysart/Vasart spoke weight would be a YVP7 and a large Vasart spoke weight would be a VP7.

Ysart & Vasart Budvase & Budvase bottoms 1946 to 1964 : Vasart as well as Strathearn made these budvases over the years. I have never seen any that I would classify as of the Ysart/Vasart period of 1946 to 1955 so these are all Vasart examples from the 1956 to 1964 period. As with the Strathearn Budvases which used the P9 minature concentric style weight for its base it is apparent that Vasart also used their VP9 minature concentric style weight for their bases. Height range is from about 5.5" to just over 7.0".

Ysart & Vasart Closepacks & Patterns : Ysart/Vasart and Vasart both made carpet ground or closepack weights in various sizes and designs over the years. Not enough of these have shown up to say for sure that they were a somewhat regular production item. I have seen one that was of the medium to small size at around 2.5" and about a dozen larger ones at 2.7" or larger. Also, a few have shown up like the one shown below which is more of a patterned closepack. Since there is no known numbering or official designation sytem for these weights or other Ysart/Vasart or Vasart weights I have used the Strathearn system for classifying them such that if I think a weight was made in the early Ysart/Vasart period of 1946 to 1955/59 then I use a YVP (Ysart/Vasart paperweight) designation, if the Vasart period of 1956 to 1964 than I use a VP (Vasart paperweight) designation. Since I've placed a pattern designation to the closepack shown I am also adding patterned millefiori weights such as the one shown to this gallery until and if I get enough of either to have separate galleries.

Ysart & Vasart Concentrics : Here we have some examples of the Ysart/Vasart period of 1946 to 1955 concentric weights. A fair number of these concentric type weights were made during this Ysart/Vasart period but for whatever reason Vasart (period 1956 to 1964) did not make very many (if any) of these concentric type weights and Strathearn did not make any concentrics until they came out with their special SP100 series in 1979 and 1980. I've noticed that almost all of these concentrics are usually attributed to Salvador but I don't think that is quite possible. Dave Moir arrived at Vasart in 1953 and Salvador was in ill health and not making any paperweights and possibly had not for a couple of years prior to that time. Considering that Ysart/Vasart did not begin operations until 1946 and Salvador most likely not making any pwts from about 1950 on then someone else had to have made some of these weights. According to Dave both Vincent and Augustine were quite talented and capable of making quality weights and while we may never know for sure just who made some of these weights I feel it is quite reasonable to consider that some of these lovely concentric weights were made by Augustine and Vincent.
