Budvase : Strathearn as well as Vasart made these budvases over the years. All of them are based on the P9 minature 3 row to 4 row millefiori concentric paperweight base, and for Vasart the VP9 Vasart minature. There appears to be a range of heights from about 5.5" to 9.0".

Candleholders Double : These Strathearn small double candleholders again use the typical budvase type bottom which is based on the P9 minature 3 row to 4 row millefiori concentric paperweight. The metal double candleholder bracket is glued to the top of the glass weight. Vasart also made these over the years but probably only during the Vasart years of 1956 to 1964. I've never seen any from the Ysart Bros Glass period of 1946 to 1955.

Commemorative Paperweights : This is one of the few Commemorative Paperweights that Strathearn made for Special Occasions. I have placed the 'special" EIIR Crown weights and the EIIR77 Lace weights into their own catagories but all other found Commemorative weights will be found in this album catagory. While we don't know how many of these 1978 World Cup weights were made, Donald McDonald stated in an article he authored for the December 2004 "Paperweight Collectors Circle" Newsletter no.86..."We also produced a 1978 Scotland World Cup football paperweight and there are not very many of those about!"

D29 Aurora Jumbo : Strathearn made this Aurora abstract series in a Minature size, a Small/Medium size and a Large size in addition to this D29 Jumbo size. I have never seen one of these Jumbo Aurora's. They were made in Grey, Red, Green, Blue and Black. I don't know when Strathearn started making these but this Jumbo size was discontined in May of 1978.

D4 Flower Magnum : These Strathearn D4 Flower weights are of a Jumbo or Magnum size ranging from about 3.4" to 3.7". They are a spherical weight encasing an open five petal flower over three green leaves and four to five double radial latticino cane twists. Most but not all were either signed with an "S" cane or dated with a "date cane" or dated and signed with both as individual canes or together in a single cane. As an example the #3 turquoise one and the #4 red one are dated with a four digit 1967 center cane. According to Dave Moir, as he remembers, 1967 was probably around the first time that Strathearn began to sign or date these D4's and the four digit 1967 cane was the first use of a four digit date cane. Other dates used were a "68" cane, a "69" cane, a "70" cane and so on and if the weight had an "S" cane attached it was almost always placed on the bottom of the weight until the combined "S-date" cane was used as shown in the "S-78" weight. These "S-date" canes were used almost exclusively from 1973 on. These D4 flower weights were made in Turquoise, Madder (a reddish-pink color) and Gentian (a violet, dark blue or almost purple color). These D4's were produced in limited quanities each year but I don't know how many per year were made or if each of the three colors was also used in each year. These D4 weights were discontinued in May of 1978.

DS43 Flower Jumbo Large : These Strathearn DS43 Flower weights are really Jumbo in size as this one shown is almost 5 inches tall x over 4 inches wide and weighs just over 72 ounces or 4 1/2 pounds. I have not found an original Strathearn description for this weight but it is modeled after the regular D4 Flower weight as it is a five petaled flower over three green leaves and rising above five twisted double latticino strands. Whereas the D4's were wider than taller these DS43's are much taller than wider. I have no idea of when Strathearn first began making these, how many were made each year or if they were made in the standard three colors as the D4's but the faceted DSF43 weight was discontinued in May of 1978 and there's no mention of the DS43 in the 1978, 1979 or 1980 Strathearn brochures so I might assume that these DS43's were discontinued at some point before May of 1978. This weight is not signed or dated but it does have an older Strathearn label on the base. The center cane also appears to be an earlier Vasart style complex cane. This is the only one that I have ever seen.

DS43 Flower Jumbo Small : These are more of Strathearn's DS43 series but they are significently smaller than the DS43 Jumbo Large so I have designated these as DS43 Jumbo Small weights. They are still taller than the older D4 Flower weights but not as wide. They are smaller versions of the Jumbo Large and again modeled after the D4's with five petaled flowers over three green leaves and rising over five twisted double strands of latticino. Again, I have no idea of when Strathearn began to make these or how many per year might have been made but I have not seen one earlier than the S72 one shown nor one after a S76 not shown. Shown below are examples from 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1975.

DSF43 Flower Jumbo Faceted : This Strathearn DSF43 weight has no formal description that I've found yet but it's description is like that of the preceeding DS43 Jumbo weights, a five petaled flower over three green leaves and rising above five twisted double latticino strands but the DSF43 would have a top facet and ten side facets. It may have also been made in the same colors as the other Strathearn Flower weights, Madder or red, Gentian or blue and Turquoise. I would expect its size to be somewhere between the DS43 Jumbo Large and the DS43 Jumbo Small weights. This would have been a very limited edition with only a rather small issue yearly. It was discontinued in May of 1978 and production was probably from around 1970 to 1978. The S76 one shown is the only one I've ever actually seen. Updates will be added as I find out new information.

EIIR Crown 1977 : This Strathearn EIIR Millefiori Crown weight is not dated, however, its date of 1952-1977 tells us is was made specifically for the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee in 1977. The edition size was supposed to be 1000 but due to difficulties at the factory it was limited to only 250. Each weight is faceted on the top and one side for standing on edge. On this edge facet it is etch signed "Strathearn and the #" for this weight. Mine as shown is #94 of this edition. Each came in a blue silk lined box and included was a certificate of authentication signed by Alistair Gordon the engraver and Angus Sillars Managing Director.

EIIR 1977 P22 : These Strathearn EIIR77 scattered millefiori on muslin or lace weights were also produced for the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee in 1977. These weights are the same size as the medium to small P22 Lace weights. The edition size is unknown at this time. Each of these weights has either eleven or twelve canes one of which is the EIIR cane and one the 77 date cane. The EIIR and 77 date are either black or blue on a white cane and encased in an orange tube. There may be other color dates but these are the only two I've seen to date and it appears that all were of this orange and white cane design. This was the only year in which this color and style of signature and date cane was used.

Experimental Abstracts : These are some abstract type weights that were probably made by various workers at Strathearn over the years as Strathearn Management encouraged its workers to experiment not only to hone their skills but also on the off chance that a really good design would show up. Many of these one offs were made as gifts for friends and relatives or perhaps for an extra bit of money. I have no idea of when they were made or by whom. Weights #1, 2, were purchased in a lot of 10 weights and later weights #6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 were all purchased together in a large lot of 39 Strathearns from the same seller. Weight #2 has a Strathearn label. Weights #3 and #4 have the Strathearn Leaping Salmon logo impressed into the bottom of the weight. Weight #5 looks like an experiment with the Strathearn Tropic P5 weight and has an unusual foot, very rare for a Strathearn weight. I'm sure there are many more of these experimental or self expression weights out there but unless someone would know for 100% certain it would be almost impossible to determine that it was a Strathearn paperweight. On these abstract weights I am using a "PE" designation for "Paperweight Experimental" until I come up with more information or a better idea. For lack of any specific names for these weights I have picked names for them that seem to represent the weights design.

Experimental Candleholders : These magnum sized candleholders were made by Strathearn in the later period of 1979 to 1980. At the March 2003 meeting of the CPC Herbert Dreier (a Master Craftsman at Strathearn from 1965 to 1980) was one of the guest speakers. In a conversation with Kevin Holt Mr. Dreier confirmed that both of these were made at Strathearn along with a third design. Mr Dreier did not give any specific date for these or who might have made them but again it shows the wide range of Strathearn paperweights and paperweight related glassware.

Experimental Flowers : These Strathearn Flower weights are all one of a kind experimental or self-expression weights made by Strathearn workers either on their off time or during the period before Strathearn ceased all paperweight production in 1980. Flower weights #3, #7 and #11 were made by Herbert Dreier and he has confirmed this me to in writing. Flower weight #2 has an S79 cane in it and an older Vasart cane as the flower center. Flower weight #4 is a very unusual multi-faceted weight with four top facets and four side facets. Flower weight #5 has a top facet and a rare amber ground. Flower weight #6 is very, very unusual in that while the flower is not particularily well made the center cane is a known Paul Ysart cane. Weight #9 uses one of Herbert Dreier's Red multi-rod canes which he designed in 1979...this cane also comes in blue. Flower weight #12 is a very rare pedestaled Red Orchid weight and Herbert even mentioned that Strathearn never used pedestals on any of their weights and he can't remember who made this one. Several of these Flower weights are of Magnum size.

Experimental Millefiori Faceted : These faceted millefiori weights may be Vasart rather than Strathearn's as I purchased them but I can't tell just yet. Both have a top facet and 12 side facets as opposed to the usual top and five side facets that Strathearn usually used on their PSF72 and PSF82 Faceted millefiori cartwheel or spoke weights. The larger one has 9 spokes and a 1-1 design whereas the smaller one has 7 spokes and a 1-3-3 design. The small one has the #9 etched on the base. These might well be older trial pieces and maybe from the Vasart to Strathearn transition period.

Experimental Millefiori Weights : These stunning Strathearn paperweights #1, #2, #3, #4 and #6 were all made by Herbert Dreier and I have written confirmation from him that he made them in the 1979 to 1980 period before Strathearn ceased all paperweight production with the exception of the tall three-tiered millefiori one which I believe was also made by him. This magnificient triple-tiered millefiori weight is just stunning in all of its details using three standard spoke designs tiered inside of a P6 style glass. A one of a kind weight. The "C" scroll weight is also most likely by Herbert as the blue multi-rod canes are his design and each of the six scrolls is capped with a complex millefiori cane. Paperweights #1, #2, #3 and #6 were featured in two articles I authored in 2003 one for the Delaware Valley PCA newsletter of September 2003 and one for the Cambridge Paperweight Circle newsletter of December 2003. It is a shame that Strathearn ceased paperweight production in 1980 and that Dave Moir, Herbert Dreier and others did not have the opportunity to continue developing their talents. It is obvious from these weights that their talent and skill was considerable. Other Experimental, Trial or One off Strathearn's will be added as acquired or as provided courtesy of Private Collectors.

Experimental Sulfides : Strathearn Sulfide weights are quite rare and according to Dave Moir and Herbert Dreier rather difficult to make because of the high glass heat affecting the sulfide piece. As seen in the first example the sulfide cracked enough to form an air bubble. Herbert Dreier in a conversation with Kevin Holt would not comment on who might have made these but Herbert did say that on those sulfides that he made the signature cane was always placed on the base of the weight. Other than these two in my collection the only others I've seen are as shown in John Simmonds book "Paperweights from Great Britain 1930-2000". The third sulfide shown is a very rare Jack Allen (JA orange cane) crown sulfide over a ground of complex Monart and early Ysart Bros Glass canes.

Pindish : Here we have another Strathearn paperweight item that I've found no mention of in any of the Strathearn brochure or catalog copies that I have, the Pindish. Both Ysart Bros Glass (1946 to 1955) and Vasart (1956 to 1964) made pindish pwts of varying sizes and in decent quanities but after the conversion of Vasart to Strathearn in January of 1965, nothing...until I found this small sized Strathearn pindish. P1 Ice Pool : Strathearn P1 Ice Pool paperweight, a piece of Scottish quartz floating in clear glass and according to the Strathearn brochure a number of Strathearn's paperweights took their inspiration from Nature and incorporated these natural materials into their weights. The P2 Stoer weight using Scottish sand and granite is another of these nature related weights. This P1 Ice Pool weight was also extended to include the PSF12 a 5/1 faceted weight and also to a PSMF123 third series that was multi-faceted on all sides. Only two paperweights were extended to three in the series like this, the other being the P6 upright flower weight. I still don't know how Strathearn derived their "P" numbering system or whether or not the P1 designates the first paperweight series that Strathearn made or perhaps just a number picked out of a "bank" of numbers. Since Strathearn was just a continuation of Vasart I'm inclined to believe that Vasart had a numbering system of some sort which Strathearn just continued to use and over time filled in the available empty "P" numbers as they developed new paperweight styles or designs. The P1 was an "open edition" weight meaning that they made as many of these each year as they wanted or felt they could sell whereas the PSF12 and the PSMF123 were limited to only 100 per year each.

P10 Millefiori Signed and Dated Large : These Strathearn P10 Large signed and dated millefiori cartwheel or spoke weights are some of the best that Strathearn made over the years. They were a special series made each year, were of a large size from 2.9" to 3.3", always on a clear ground and were always signed and dated. They were made with 7, 8, 9, and 10 spokes and in a 1-1-2 design, a 1-2-2 design, a 1-2-3 design and a 1-2-2-3 design that I have found so far. At this time I don't have any definitive proof that they were a limited edition weight but they rarely show up so for the time being I am assuming that they were a Limited Edition and probably limited to around 100 to 150 per year. Not exactly sure when they were first made but the earliest ones that I've found are dated 1969. They were only made until mid 1978 as the Strathearn brochure that I have indicates that they were discontinued on 1 May 1978 but I do have one dated 1979 and this 1979 one is probably very rare as it is the only one that I've ever seen to date. Also according to Dave Moir, he said that there were not a lot of these P10's made but it was impossible for him to remember how many of each pwt that was made and that these were "special up market types".

This is one of the finest Lace paperweights I've ever seen from Strathearn. Someone took extra special care and time to precisely place these canes in a distinct pattern instead of Strathearn's usual random, scattered placement. As far as I know to date Strathearn only made these in a large size ranging from 2.7+" to about 3.0". According to Dave Moir these Stoer weights were quite difficult to make as they had to be very careful and maintain a constant glass temperature to keep the sand and granite from falling through the weight. P22 Lace Medium to Small : Strathearn classified their Lace weights as only Large and Small. These P22 weights are the Small ones, however, as with many of Strathearn's pwt series I find a lot of size variation so I've divided these P22 Lace weights into Small at less than 2.5" wide and Medium at more than 2.5" but less than about 2.75" as these start the large catagory. These medium to small Lace weights usually have between ten to eleven spaced canes in each pwt. They were produced from 1965 to 1 May 1978 when they were discontinued. Some of these were signed and dated such as the EIIR77 weight which has its own catagory, some were used as the knob of the DK2 Lace Doorknob and some were just signed and dated. I have seen a couple of these signed and dated P22's but I don't have an example of one yet but once I find one I'll list a new album as P22DS. I have no idea of how many of these were produced each year but Dave Moir has mentioned to me that all the Lace pwts were a bit difficult and time consuming to make due to the delicate nature of the latticino strands used. A very attractive pwt in any size.

P23 Lace Minature : This is Strathearn's Minature Lace paperweight. While there are several names for this weight such as latticino or muslin Strathearn just called all these (large, medium or small) Lace weights. These minatures range in size from about 1.5" to about 2.0". They generally have only nine spaced millefiori canes. These minatures were produced from the late 1960's until around 1977 as I have a Strathearn brochure/catalog dated 1 May 1978 and they are not listed as a current production item. It is not unusual to find Vasart canes in the earlier ones. Some of these were signed and dated. These lovely Lace weights were also made in other sizes ranging from small, medium, large. magnum and super-magnum sizes and a number of series were faceted and multi-faceted. Production quanities are unknown at this time.

P26 Aurora Minature : This is part of Strathearn's Aurora series of pwts comprising these minatures, medium to small ones, large and a jumbo series. I've not found a formal description nor why this series is called Aurora. It appears made by first using a gather of clear molten glass that is then coated with the same types of glass that Strathearn used as a ground for many of their pwts but first rolled in a tray of broken cane chips and bit pieces and then covered with another gather of clear glass.. Columns of bubbles are then introduced forming the divisions or slices. On these P26 minatures the bubble columns are three to four bubbles high depending on the size of the minature with the final or top bubble forming a cap at the top of the Aurora pwt. These minatures range in size from about 1.3" wide to about 2.2". Colors are stated as being in Grey, Red, Green, Blue and Black but I've also found one in a multi-color range. Production quanities are unknown at this time and for now produced from 1965 to 1979.

On these P27's the bubble columns are five bubbles high with the final or top bubble forming a cap at the top of the Aurora pwt. These range in size from under 2.5" for the small ones to 2.5" plus for the mediums but less than 2.7" at which the large Aurora starts. Made in colors of Grey, Red, Green, Blue and Black. P3 Urchin Jumbo : Here we have a previously unknown to exist Jumbo P3 Urchin weight in Green. In all of the 'scanty' Strathearn literature, brochures and catalogs there was no mention of Strathearn ever having made a paperweight of this Urchin series so large. Truely a magnificent weight and a true Jumbo size. Perhaps this was an experimental, a trial or just an 'off-time' weight made by one of the workers and just maybe another one exists in Red or another color.

The order of the color design varied as two I have shown are white, orange, yellow and blue while the 3rd one is white, blue, yellow and orange/red. They were all of a large size ranging from about 2.75" to just over 3.0". These were made by Donald McDonald who started at Strathearn at the age of 17 on Dec. 9, 1968 until May of 1980 when Stuart Glass took over and pwt production ceased. Perthshire also made a series of these Orchid looking flower weights in 1969 through 1971 in different colors but the major difference was that Perthshire's had only a single stamin whereas Strathearn's always has three stamins. Recently a very kind individual that I bought a few Strathearn pwts from sent me a couple of older Strathearn color brochures or catalogs from circa 1974 to 1976 and one of the listings was for a signed and dated Orchid weight designated as a P24. Strathearn's description for this Orchid weight is..."an opening bud encased in a clear glass weight". It was most likely made in the same three colors as the regular general production P4 Orchid weight, Turquoise, Madder (a pinkish/red) and Sepia (a brownish color). It is the same size of the regular P4's at about 2.7" to 3.0". I have seen a red one with an "S74" date cane on the base. At this time I have no idea how many of these Strathearn P24 signed and dated weights were made or if they were a limited edition. Any new info that I come across will be recorded here.

P7 Millefiori Large : Strathearn's millefiori paperweights were the primary production weight throughout its years and according to Dave Moir, as with many of Strathearn's pwts, were made in quanity and as needed. The more that sold the more they made. However, that's an interesting statement as it seems to imply that perhaps other weights didn't have such large quanities made so as to allow more time to make these spoke or cartwheel pwts. It's important to remember that Strathearn could not make a living selling pwts only, they had full days making other glassware. Plus as you can see in these albums Strathearn had quite an extensive pwt and pwt related line in addition to their glass bowls, dishes, vases of many sizes, lamps and so on. It is also of interest that probably a large inventory of Vasart canes continued as regular inventory and both Dave Moir and Herbert Dreier have mentioned that the "set up" girls used whatever canes were handy or appealed to them while doing the pwt setups. Even up to 1979 and 1980 Vasart and Ysart Bros canes were used in pwts. These are some examples of Strathearn's P7 Large millefiori weights. I've found them using anywhere from five latticino spokes to fifteen spokes and an unlimited array of cane designs. This large millefiori weight ranged in size from over 2.7" to over 3.0". Also according to dave Moir..."we had a 'rep' who went round various up market shops and did the selling. When I started working (at Vasart) we had one. When Strathearn finished we had about four. We were even in Harrods of London."

At some point in 1979 everyone was aware that Strathearn was being sold so production for 1979 is also unknown at this time. P8 Millefiori Medium to Small : These Strathearn medium to small millefiori spoke or cartwheel weights are a continuation of Strathearn's mainstay production weights. Strathearn only classified these millefiori weights as large or small but within this small size I've found them ranging in size from about 2.2" to just under 2.7" so I've divided them into a small size from about 2.2" to just under 2.5" and a medium size from 2.5" to just under 2.7". The color range and cane variety is quite enormous and shows the huge divirsity and innovation of the Strathearn workers. Production quanities are unknown at this time but according to Dave Moir they made as many as they could sell. The more sold the more made. Strathearn also had a rather strict quality control system which caused a bit of friction between the glassmakers and management as the glassmakers were on a pay and bonus system. Dave Moir said..."having said that you may think our work was slapdash but believe me we really cared about what we made. If we made a pwt that we thought would be rejected we would throw it in the scrap bin ourselves. There were three main faults that we looked for, stones, unmelted batch, and chord." Production was from 1965 to 1980. As I've stated before it is not uncommon to find Vasart canes in these weights from time to time as the remaining Vasart canes were used along side the Strathearn inventory.

The great majority of these P9's have three concentric tows of canes around a central or center cane but sometimes you'll find a two row concentric design. These minature weights were made from around 1965 to at perhaps early 1978. Vasart also made this type of minature paperweight. Not many of these faceted weights were made simply because the additional labor involved could barely be accounted for in pricing the weights. PP10 Millefiori Large Signed and Dated Top & Side Facet : This is the signed and dated PP10 with the same description as the regular signed P10 version except with a top facet and a side facet for standing the pwt on edge for presentation. The first one has an "S74" date cane in it while the second one is an "S71" The earliest signed and dated Strathearn millefiori I've found to date is an "S69" P10 so it's quite possible that these PP10's were also made as early as 1969. A copy of Strathearn's Trade brochure for 1978 that I have shows the P10 being discontinued in May of 1978 but the PP10's are not listed at all suggesting that they were discontinued at an earlier date possibly around 1977 or earlier. As with many of Strathearns pwts I don't know what the edition size is for this weight. Again, the "PP" designation is for a "Portrait Paperweight". All of Strathearns various paperweights with a top and side facet were classified as "Portrait Paperweights". To date these are the only two of these I've seen. While I had only the "S74" one and it being the only one I'd seen in almost eight years I had originally assumed that this weight was a possible regular P10 gone wrong and faceted to save the weight or perhaps originally earmarked for an Overlay paperweight but now that I've found two of them I'm inclined to believe that a PP10 designation did actually exist. The only way I'll know for sure is if I can ever find a copy of a Strathearn brochure or catalog dated prior to 1977.

PPS101 Portrait Patterned Millefiori Signed & Dated Top & Side Facet : These weights designated as PPS or Portrait Paperweight Strathearn were a new design and issue for 1979 and most likely carried on into 1980. This PPS 101 is the Portrait Patterned Millefiori weight and as with Strathearns other "PP" weights has a top facet and a side facet for standing on edge. There are five groups of new and complex canes evenly spaced around a central and often complex cane. Sometimes a signature and date cane may have been used as the central cane or the weight would be etch signed, dated and numbered on the standing edge facet or the base of the paperweight. This design, one of three in this series, was to be limited to 500 pieces per year per design and each weight was to be signed, numbered and supplied with an authentication card and a special horseshoe shaped presentation box, Thanks to a Private Collector we have this example.

PPS102 Portrait Garland Millefiori Signed & Dated Top & Side Facet : These weights designated as PPS or Portrait Paperweights or possibly Portrait Paperweight Strathearn were a new design and issue for 1979 and carried into 1980. This PPS102 is the Portrait Garland Millefiori weight and as with Strathearns other "PP" weights has a top facet and side facet for standing on edge. New and complex canes for 1979 form the outer concentric ring, the garland and the center cane. This design, one of three in this series, was to be limited to 500 pieces per year per design and each weight was to be etch signed, numbered, supplied with a authentication card and came in a special horseshoe presentation box. This example of mine shown is not signed, numbered or dated and probably because it has a small defect on the lower edge at about 5:00 o'clock and was most likely set aside for rejecting or destruction at a later time. This one has to be circa 1979 or 1980.

PSF102 Millefiori Large Signed and Dated 5 & 1 Facets : This is Strathearns PSF102 faceted millefiori spoke or cartwheel paperweight. This series PSF102 used the regular P10 weight except this PSF102 is faceted with a top facet and five side facets. It looks quite like the PSF72 or PSF82 faceted spoke weights with one material difference that designates it as a PSF102, it has a clear base. Only the P10 series of weights had a clear base, all others had a colored ground. So, this is the second in the P10 series and so designated by the "102" in PSF102. This is a Limited Edition weight of only 100 per year as indicated in my Strathearn brochure. All of Strathearns faceted and multi-faceted weights were limited to only 100 pieces per year. This PSF102 series was discontinued in May of 1978 and since the earliest dated millefiori weight I've found to date is dated 1969 I suspect these were made from 1969 to May of 1978. Note: There may have been a third weight in this P10 clear base series as I currently have two other large millefiori paperweights with a clear base but with only a top facet and a side facet which may actually be PP10's...see the PP10DS album. Further research is needed on this or perhaps other examples.

PSF12 Ice Pool 5 & 1 Facets : Here we have the second issue in the Ice Pool series, this is the Strathearn PSF12 with five side facets and a top facet. The regular P1 Ice Pool weight is the first in the series, this is the second in the series and is so designated by the 2 digit and there is a third in this series the PSMF123 which is faceted on all sides and is so designated by the 3 digit. As per the Strathearn brochure all of these Faceted and Multi-faceted ranges were Limited Editions with each title limited to 100 pieces for any year. Each piece was to be dated, signed and numbered and supplied with an authentication card but the brochure does not state whether or not any pieces were etch signed and dated and numbered or if this info was only supplied on the authentication card. However, I suspect that we'll find some of these PSF12 weights with no etching at all, some with a signature and the date and perhaps some with the edition number also.

PSF142 Carpet Large Closepack 5 & 1 Facets : This Strathearn PSF142 weight is one of Strathearn's Limited Edition Faceted and Multi-faceted Ranges. This is the Large P14 Carpet Ground Millefiori Closepack but faceted with a top facet and five side facets. This is the third weight in this series, first being the regular P14 Large Closepack, second being the PP14 which had a top facet and side facet for standing on edge and third this one the PSF142. Edition limited to 100 per year. Each piece was supposed to be signed, dated and numbered and came with a card of authentication and a Special Prresentation box. However, as with many of Strathearn's faceted and multi-faceted range some are not signed and dated. My examples shown are NOT signed or dated. The question remains, as with other editions, does the 100 piece per year edition size mean both the S&D'd ones and the unsigned ones or was the actual S&D'd edition size smaller than 100. Not sure we'll ever have a difinitive answer but to date I have not seen a S&D'd one of these. I'm not sure when these were first produced but suspect around 1969 and were discontinued sometime before 1978 as my 1978 Strathearn brochure does not show this weight as active at that time. Circa 1969 to 1977.

PSF142DS Carpet Large Clospack 5&1 Facets : Here we finally have a signed and dated example of the Strathearn PSF142 limited edition large Carpet Ground Millefiori Closepack. This weight was part of the Strathearn faceted and multi-faceted ranges and has a top facet and five side facets. This is the third weight in this series, first being the regular P14 large closepack, second the PP14 which has a top facet and a side facet for standing on edge and third this PSF142 top and five sided faceted weight. Since I now have both signed and unsigned versions of this weight I've elected to have two catagories, the regular PSF142 unsigned album and the PSF142DS album to distinguish between the two. The question still remains, did the edition size of 100 per year include both signed and unsigned versions? Not sure when these were first produced but I suspect around 1969 to 1970 and were discontinued before May 1 1978 and perhaps during 1976 or 1977.

PSF152 Carpet Medium to Small Closepack 5 & 1 Facets : This is Strathearn's PSF152 Medium to Small Carpet Ground Millefiori Closepack with a top facet and five side facets. It is part of Strathearn's faceted and multi-faceted range with a limited edition of 100 per year. Each piece was supposed to be signed, dated and number with a authentication card and a special presentation box. Neither of my two examples are signed or dated. There is nothing wrong with either of these, both are in perfect conditon so why were they not S&D'd? Did the limited edition issue of 100 include these unsigned ones or...? I have no idea at this point. These PSF152 weights show up as active in my 1978 and 1980 Strathearn brochures so production is assumed from around 1968 to 1980. Strathearn only listed these as being in the large PSF142 size or small PSF152 size but as with almost all weight catagories I've found the small sizes ranging from around 2.3" to just under 2.7" so I've divided these into a small range at about 2.3" to just under 2.5" and medium at 2.5 to just under 2.7".

PSF212 Lace Large 5 & 1 Facets

Updated: Jul 04, 2005 9:01pm PST

PSF212DS Lace Large Signed & Dated 5 & 1 Facets : This is Strathearn's Large PSF212 Lace paperweight. It is a faceted weight with a top facet and five side facets and generally twelve spaced or scattered canes. As with all of Strathearn's Faceted and Multi-faceted ranges of weights they are a Limited Edition of only 100 per year. Each piece is supposed to be signed, dated and numbered and a card of authentication. The problem that I have is that I've also found unsigned and undated versions of many of Strathearn's Faceted and Multi-faceted issues and I don't know if the stated edition size of 100 per year includes both or if separate editions were made for each. No indication whatsoever in any Strathearn literature that I have seen to date so for the time being it remains a mystery. Since the earliest dated Strathearn millefiori weight that I've seen was dated 1968 I am assuming for the time being that these were made at least from 1968 to 1 May 1978 when they were discontinued.

They generally have between ten and twelve spaced millefiori canes on a lace or muslin ground. They were part of Strathearn's Faceted and Multi-faceted ranges of limited issues. Stated edition size was 100 per year but again some were signed and dated while others were not and to date I don't know if this 100 edition size included both. PSF232 Lace Minature 5 & 1 Facets

Updated: Jan 19, 2005 8:04pm PST

PSF232DS Lace Minature Signed & Dated 5 & 1 Facets : This is the smallest Strathearn Lace paperweight that Strathearn made and faceted. It is the PSF232 and is modeled after the regular issue P23 minature lace weight. This faceted version has a top facet and five side facets. Generally has between nine and ten scattered millefiori canes two of which are the signature and date canes. As with all of Strathearn's Faceted and Multi-faceted ranges this is a Limited Edition issue and was supposed to be limited to only 100 per year or less. These were made from about 1969 to around 1977. My 1978 Strathearn brochure does not have this one listed as an active production weight. Each piece was to be signed, dated and numbered and provided with a card of authentication. While these two shown are S&D'd neither is numbered and not many of Strathearn's pwts actually had the issue number etched on them and I am beginning to suspect that the issue number was placed on the authentication card so once the card is lost so to is the issue number for that particular weight.

Some of these PSF42 weights have all even size side facets while others have different size alternating side facets. It was made in the standard Strathearn flower weight colors of Madder or red, Turquoise, and Sepia or brownish. It was made in sizes ranging from about 2.7" to about 3.0". PSF242 Orchid Signed & Dated 12 & 1 Facets and 5&1 Facets : This is Strathearn's PSF242 Faceted and signed and dated Orchid paperweight. It's description is the same as the regular P4 Orchid weight..."an opening bud encased in a clear glass weight", except that these PSF242 (while the same as the PSF42 not signed and dated weights) are dated and signed in addition to being faceted. I have set up new individual catagories for those weights of various series that are actually signed and dated in order to make it easier to view the differences in the same catagory weights. I had originally thought that Strathearn did not have a distinction between a regular PSF42 Orchid weight and one that is actually signed and dated so I initially used a PSF42DS separation catagory just to make viewing of these faceted orchid weights easier, however, just a few months ago I was very fortunate (thanks to a very kind pwt seller) to acquire an actual color Strathearn brochure/catalog that shows that these signed and dated faceted orchid weights did have their own designation number as PSF242. Since I had found a regular PSF42 Orchid weight with a top facet and twelve side facets I suspected that any dated ones would be the same, however here shown is a PSF242 Red Orchid weight and a PSF242 Turquoise Orchid weight that have a top facet and only five side facets so this album will include any faceted or multi-faceted Orchid weights except those that have a different specific catagory designation of their own.

PSF52 Tropic 8 & 1 Facets : Strathearn called these weights Tropic... multicolored fronds weaving through drop-shaped clear glass. The regular Tropic weight is the P5 and was a general production weight. The PSF52 (a second series) is a faceted version with a top facet and eight side facets. This was a Limited Edition weight of only 100 pieces per year and each weight was supposed to be dated, signed and numbered along with a authentication card and special presentation box. However, the one shown in this album is NOT dated, signed or numbered and I have seen a couple of others also not dated or signed so I have set up two albums, one for this regular PSF52 Tropic weight series and a PSF52DS album for those that are actually dated, signed and numbered. The question now is, if Strathearn stated that these faceted Tropics were limited to only 100 per year does that 100 limit include only those actually dated, signed & numbered or all of the 8/1 faceted Tropic weights? If the 100 total per year made is inclusive then it would indicate perhaps that less than 100 dated, signed & numbered Tropics were actually made each year, the rest being just regular 8/1 faceted Tropics. These Tropic weights were made according to the Strathearn catalog only in Red, Blue and Green but the one shown in this album is predominately Yellow and if you look at the regular P5 Tropic album you'll see other predominate colors and color combinations than Red, Blue and Green. Circa early 1970's to at least 1979 and maybe 1980.

PSF252 Tropic Signed & Dated 8 & 1 Facets : This Strathearn Tropic weight was one of Strathearn's Faceted Range of Limited Editions and supposedly limited to only 100 dated, signed and numbered pieces each year. They came with a authentication card and a special presentation box. They have a Top facet and eight side facets. They are described as multicolored fronds weaving through a drop-shaped clear glass. I had originally thought that this multi-faceted signed and dated Tropic weight series did not have a separate designation assigned to it but was just included in the regular PSF52 multi-faceted Tropic weights so I had initially assigned it a designation of PSF52DS to separate the signed ones from the ones not signed however, several months ago a very kind seller that I had bought a few weights from sent me two early Strathearn brochures or catalogs and one circa 1975 had a photo and designation of PSF252 listed for these signed and dated multi-faceted Tropic weights so we now have another official designation. The Tropic weights shown in this album are a multi-colored one dated 1979 and another with predominate highlights of orange, yellow and white dated 1973 instead of Strathearn's stated colors of mostly Red, Blue and Green. The earliest signed and dated one I've seen is the S73 one shown so these are circa early 1970's to at least 1979 and maybe 1980.

PSF72 Spoke 5&1 Facets : These Strathearn PSF72 Large weights are part of Strathearn's Faceted and Multi-faceted Limited Edition Range Issues where the faceted range usually had 5/1 facets to 8/1 facets depending on the pwt and the multi-faceted range were pwts faceted on all sides. Each titled piece was supposed to be limited to 100 each for any year and each was to be dated, signed and numbered with an accompanying authentication card. However, as seen in other faceted weight galleries some of these faceted weights were NOT dated, signed or numbered posing the question of were only 100 actually made or more? Why were some dated, signed and numbered and some not and does the stated 100 limit comprise actual dated, signed and numbered weights or both? Questions we may never know the exact answer to. These PSF72 weights shown have no obvious defects and seem to be as perfect as those shown in the PSF72DS album. Each titled series within the faceted and multi-faceted range was supposed to be limited to 100 each for any year and each was

It was limited to no more than 150 each per year, was supplied in a Special Presentation box and was either signed and dated and numbered on the pwt or on the accompanying authentication card or perhaps both. I'm not sure when these were first made but I suspect as with the others in this Collectors Range probably around 1970 and perhaps earlier. As you can see below at least two colors have been used for the overlay. Below we have a blue overlay using the Strathearn SP100 Concentric Millefiori and this pwt is etched Strathearn 1979 #3, the second one shown in a lovely purple most likely has used a P10 style spoke pwt and has a S79 signature cane in it but it is not numbered that I know of and the third blue overlay example again most likely has used an older P10 spoke weight but only has an S signature cane. A perfect example of the varying methods Strathearn used to sign and date their pwts and lends proof to my belief that without the authentication card a lot of important information on these pwts can be lost such as the date and edition number for the third blue overlay shown and the edition number for the purple overlay. Since two of these are 1979 dated I suspect there's a few out there dated 1980.

PSFC182 Overlay Flower : Here we have Strathearn's Overlay Flower PSFC182 paperweight and it was part of the Strathearn special "Collector Range Limited Issues". Strathearn used a smaller version of the regular D4 Flower weight for these Overlay Flower weights. They were also limited to 150 each per year, were supplied in a Special Presentation box and was either signed and dated and numbered on the paperweight or on the authentication card or both to some degree. The example shown thanks to a Private Collector is signed and dated with an S70 cane on the base but the pwt is not numbered. This series number was probably only on the authentication card. As with the other PSFC series paperweights I am not sure when these issues were first made but 1970 is the earliest date I've seen so far. I would also suspect that several different overlay colors were used over the years and perhaps within the same edition year and we might find that the flowers were made in the same three colors as the D4's and the P6's. The Strathearn Trade brochures show these weights as still active for 1978 and 1979 and I think it's possible into 1980 too.

This one shown is a special one as it has only four side facets instead of the usual five side facets and was made by Dave Moir and perhaps Herbert Dreier. I have seen three other of these Overlay lace weights, one in a blue overlay with four side facets, a regular edition issue also in a blue overlay and dated 1980 and also a very special pink overlay one that had regular facets and a series of horizontal oval facets. I suspect that production dates also run from around 1970 to 1980.

PSFC202 Crown : This is Strathearn's regular Crown paperweight but its designation is PSFC202 Crown even though it is not faceted as are the other PSFC series weights. See the PSFC162 album for the overlay crowns. This PSFC202 Crown weight was also part of the Strathearn special "Collectors Range Limited Issues" and was also limited to 150 each per year was supplied in a Special Presentation box and was either signed and dated and numbered on the pwt or on the accompanying authentication card or both to some degree. The first one shown has a yellow and white signature and date cane S-71 and etched #5 on the base, the second one is not signed, dated or numbered that I know of, the third one is signed and dated S-73 and the fourth one is an S76. I suspect as with the other PSFC series issues that these were made from around 1970 to 1980.

PSFS101 Faceted Patterned Millefiori 5&1 Facets : This is Strathearn's PSFS101 Faceted Patterned Millefiori paperweight. In 1979 Strathearn came out with three new paperweight series, the SP series, the PPS series and the PSFS series and each series had three new pwt designs designated as 100, 101 and 102. There were three basic designs used, a concentric millefiori as seen in the SP100 album, a patterned millefiori as seen in the SP101 album and a garland millefiori as seen in the SP102 album...these three basic designs were used for each of the other two series the PPS and PSFS. The Strathearn Trade brochure states of these new pwts..."Our new range of paperweights of millefiori designs to be limited to 500 pieces in each design and style. Each weight will be signed, numbered and authenticated and supplied in a special horseshoe presentation box". As with almost all of the sepcial faceted and multi-faceted and collectors range of pwts Strathearn did not always sign, date and number each and every weight, some weights...yes, some weights...partially and on others only on the authentication card. The Trade brochure copy that I have is not dated so I do not know when in 1979 these pwts were first introduced but they were carried on into 1980 as I have some dated 1980 and have seen others.

There were three basic designs used, a concentric millefiori as seen in the SP100 album, a patterned millefiori as seen in the SP101 album and a garland millefiori as seen in the SP102 album and thanks to a Private Collector the PSFS102 shown below. The Strathearn Trade brochure states of these new pwts..."Our new range of paperweights of millefiori designs to be limited to 500 pieces in each design and style. Each weight will be signed, numbered and authenticated and supplied in a special horseshoe shaped presentation box". The weight shown below is etch signed on the base S79 no8 but does not have the accompanying authentication card. As with almost all of the special faceted and multi-faceted and collectors range of pwts Strathearn did not always sign, date and number each and every weight, some weights...yes, some weights...partially and on others perhaps only on the authentication card. PSM213 Lace Magnum

Updated: Dec 02, 2005 10:42pm PST

PSM213DS Lace Magnum S&D : This is the largest (true Magnum size) millefiori paperweight that Strathearn ever made, the PSM213. There is no formal designation, description or information on this paperweight that I have found to date. I picked the PSM213 designation for the regular Magnum Lace wight (although I've not seen one yet) and the PSM213DS designation for the signed and dated Magnum Lace weight based on the following logic...the first in the large lace series is the P21 and to which I have added a P21DS for those P21 weights that are actually signed and dated, this first P21 series also included the PP21 large lace weight with a top facet and a side facet for standing on edge, The third in the large lace series is the PSF212 which has five side facets and a top facet and again I added a PSF212DS album simply because I've found some of these PSF212 weights that are S&D'd and some that are not and so the fourth lace series would be the Magnum sizes which would logically be the PSM213 for the Magnum Lace unsigned (of which I've not seen any) and the PSM213DS for the Magnum Lace signed and dated weights as shown in this album. There also happens to be another extension of this wonderful weights series, the PSMF213DS Magnum Multi-faceted signed and dated weights of which I have two and they are the only two I've ever seen. I've have no inforamtion as to when these were first produced, if they were made in any quanity or when they were discontinued but you'll see below examples for 1969, 1970 and 1971...perhaps these were the only years any were made and maybe not...only time will tell.

PSMF213DS Lace Magnum 10&1 Facets : This is the multi-faceted version of the PSM213DS Magnum Lace weights and I have catagorized these pwts as PSMF213DS to separate the Magnum Lace weights from the Multi-faceted Magnum Lace weights. As with the PSM213 I have found no formal designation, description or information on these faceted weights. Each has a top facet and ten side facets (five upper facets and five lower facets) with a flat cut polished base. Both of these are signed and dated S-70. At this time I do not know if a number of these were made over a few year period or if these were only trial pieces. Faceting was very labor intensive and due to cost measures Strathearn tried to keep the faceting of pwts to only those officially designated as faceted or multi-faceted. Only time will tell if more of these show up, for now these are the only two I've ever seen.

PSMF123 Ice Pool Multi-faceted all sides : This is the Strathearn PSMF123 Ice Pool multi-faceted on all sides and is the third in the Ice Pool weight series. The first is the regular P1 Ice Pool weight, the second is the PSF12 Ice Pool with a top facet and five side facets. These as with other of the Strathearn Faceted and Multi-faceted ranges were limited issues of only 100 pieces per year, each piece was supposed to be dated, signed and numbered with accompanying authentication card. Supplied in a Special presentation box. Not sure when these were first produced but the May 1978 Trade brochure copy I have shows them as a still active pwt so there's a good chance some were made in 1979 and 1980.

PSMF523 Tropic Multi-faceted all sides : This Strathearn Tropic weight was one of Strathearn's Multi-faceted range of Limited Editions. The first in the Tropic series was the regular P5 Tropic, the second in the series was the PSF52 Tropic unsigned weights and the PSF52DS Tropic (catagory I added for those Tropics that were actually signed and dated) and this PSMF523 Tropic is the third in the series. The P5 Tropics were all sort of bullet shaped, the PSF52 Tropics had a rounded bullet top and/or sometimes a flat top facet with eight side facets whereas the PSMF523 Tropic has a flat top facet and twelve side facets or basically faceted on all sides top to bottom. I have not seen a formal description of these PSMF523 Tropic weights but they have the same basic description...multicolored fronds weaving through a drop-shaped clear glass...as for the P5's and PSF52's. It may well be that this twelve side faceted Tropic weight belongs to the regular PSF52 eight side faceted catagory but since Strathearn does have other "all sides faceted weights" I've opted to have this weight in its own catagory for the time being. Perhaps other twelve sided faceted Tropics can be found over time. Circa at least around 1973 to 1979 or perhaps 1980. Edition side is unknown as it may have been included in the 100 per year for the other PSF52 faceted range of Tropic weights.

PSMF623 Flower Upright Multi-faceted all sides : Here we have the third weight in the P6 series, the PSMF623 Upright Flower Multi-faceted on all sides. The regular P6 upright flower is the first in the series, the second is the PSF62 and PSF62DS which has a top facet and usually five side facets. This PSMF623 weight is one of the Strathearn Faceted and Multi-faceted ranges of limited issues. Each title piece was limited to 100 pieces for any year. Each weight was supposed to be dated, signed and numbered with a authentication card but as I have seen with many of the other issues in these limited edition series not all pwts were signed, dated and numbered, some were, some were not and some had this information only on the authentication card. Both of the examples that I have shown below are not signed and dated. I would suspect that one of these multi-faceted flower weights was also done in turquoise to match the three colors used in the P6 series and the P4 Orchid series.

Slag Glass : I've titled these items as Strathearn Slag Glass for lack of a better catagory. Not sure what they were originally intended to be. Dave Moir has told me that Strathearn had a good quality control system for the weights that were found suitable for retailing and anything else was supposed to be discarded and destroyed. It's is quite possible that these were 'friggers' by one of the workers that went wrong and it was kept anyway by that individual and even labeled possibly just for a novelity item. Interesting nevertheless and I have seen a blue one several years ago.

Strathearn/Teachers Whiskey Squashed Nut Bowl : Strathearn squashed bottle Nut Bowl catalog Number NB. This item represents the link between Strathearn Glass and William Teacher & Sons, distillers of Scotch Whiskey. In 1963 Mr. A.K. Berguis, Export Director of William Teacher & Sons was in New York and was shown a curiosuly deformed Teacher's whiskey bottle which had been left overnight in a potters oven. The bottle was carefully brought home and after being shown to almost every glass manufacturer in Great Britain, all of whom expressed total disbelief that such a thing could be made, it was shown to Vincent Ysart at Vasart Glass in Perth. Vincent agreed to attempt to duplicate the process and after about six months or so was successful but at the time only employing four people at Vasart their maximum output was only about 120 squashed bottles per week. The first overseas orders for this item represented many years of production at this rate so it became necessary to consider expansion. William Teacher & Sons acquired a controlling interest in Vasart in 1964 and built a new glassworks on Muthill Road, in Crief Scotland. In January of 1965 Vasart moved to their new location and the company name was changed to Strathearn Glass.
